PTOSIS (Droopy Eyelid)

1 year ago 532

Ptosis is a condition when the upper eyelid is droopy. It may affect one eye or both. It may be seen in children or adults or even sometimes may occur in the elderly. Ptosis may be present since birth or may occur later in life due to trauma, disease or ageing.

Ptosis can vary in severity from mild droop of about 1-2 mm to severe drooping where the eyelid covers the pupil of the eye and obstructs vision.

Fortunately most cases are easily curable with surgery.

Before any treatment is undertaken, every ptosis patient needs a thorough evaluation of the disease condition and the status of the eyes. Sometimes ptosis may be associated with other eye problems, like Lazy eye, Astigmatism, Eye muscle movement disorders, systemic neuromuscular disorders etc.

In children treatment depends on the age of the child, the severity of ptosis and presence or absence of other associated conditions. All children with ptosis, whether they need surgery or not, must visit their eye practioner for regular check-ups.
