Watery eyes in babies

1 year ago 398

Quite often babies may have tears spilling onto their cheeks, from one or both eyes. Sometimes it may be associated with whitish or yellowish discharge also. While it may seem alarming, most often it is harmless. In upto 20% of infants, the tear duct is not fully developed at birth or is partially blocked. This resolves in 90% children by the age of 1 year. Other causes for watering include allergy, blocked nose, foreign body in the eye etc. However an eye specialist must assess the child once to rule out serious causes like glaucoma, corneal ulcer etc and also to prescribe appropriate antibiotics in case of secondary infection. Your eye doctor can also guide you on how to do the Criggler’s massage, which helps to open up the ducts faster and relieve the watering.
